How do hotel key cards work?and which one is the best for you?

Hotel key cards, also known as electronic key cards or key fobs, use RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology to function. Here's a basic overview of how they work:

Encoding Information: When a guest checks in, the hotel's computer system encodes information onto the key card's magnetic stripe or RFID chip. This information typically includes the guest's room number, check-in and check-out dates, and possibly other details.

Magnetic Stripe or RFID Chip: The key card can have either a magnetic stripe or an RFID chip embedded in it. The magnetic stripe contains the encoded information, while the RFID chip stores the information electronically.

Magnetic Stripe: When using a magnetic stripe, the guest inserts the card into a card reader on the door lock. The reader then reads the encoded information, and if it matches the stored data for the room and guest, the door lock mechanism is released.

RFID Chip: With RFID technology, the guest typically just needs to hold the card near the card reader. The reader sends out radio waves that power the RFID chip, allowing it to transmit the encoded information wirelessly. If the information is valid, the door lock is released.

Expiration: The key cards are usually programmed to expire after the guest's check-out date, ensuring that the card cannot be used to access the room after the guest has left.

Security: Electronic key cards are considered more secure than traditional mechanical keys, as they can be easily deactivated and reprogrammed. If a guest loses their key card, the hotel can quickly issue a new one without having to change physical locks.

Audit Trail: The hotel's computer system keeps a record of when key cards are used, providing a digital audit trail. This can be useful for security and tracking guest movements.
